Tustin, California Tutoring Schools

Tustin, California Tutoring SchoolsTustin, CA is one of the major international cities in the state of California. One of the major reasons why Tustin is so popular is that it is one of the centers of specialization in the creative arts. There are now several different types of schools in Tustin. There are several options for t tutoring; all of them have some kind of student with the cultural and ethnic background to flourish well and learn from Tustin tutoring. The Tustin tutoring schools offer various types of tutoring programs. The tutoring service can range from specialized services, which provide services to students with special interests, to more general tutoring programs that cover a wider variety of people with diverse interests. The individual student and family goals are also considered when choosing the specific educational program to meet the needs of the student. Specialized Tustin tutoring services are essential to the development of students with a broad range of skills and interests. With the establishment of tutoring schools in Tustin, students are now able to find a perfect match to meet their educational goals. The best type of Tustin tutoring is the one that caters to the needs of the student with the culture of the area. The Tustin tutoring program might include special courses on a particular language. The person who is being tutored might learn in a language that is not normally learned in the person's culture. The Cultural Orientation courses and Programs typically contain diverse or cultural curriculums such as Radio, Dance, Art, Chess, Youth Coaching, and more. The main goal of the tutoring program is to offer a variety of cultural programs for the student to learn. The Tustin tutoring school may be a one-year or a two year program. The school can help the person and the individual student improve their math and English vocabulary, as well as help the person learn or maintain their interpersonal skills, in a very beneficial way. The online Tustin tutoring, even though may be popular, is not the best choice for some people because of the costs. The online tutoring will allow a person to gain knowledge, but a person will not always be in the same physical space to practice or work on a specific skill or study. If a person already has a foundation in a foreign language or their own special language, the Tustin tutoring school can work with that person. The emphasis is usually more on the person's culture and the individual's needs.

How Teachers Can Support And Evaluate Other Teachers

How Teachers Can Support And Evaluate Other Teachers Youre a teacher. Your performance is evaluated by teachers, judged and rated by teachers. Your mentor is a teacher, and your boss is a teacher. Imagine that. Would you love it or hate it? What if youre a student or parent how do you feel then? The Montgomery County Public Schools system in Rockville, Maryland has a unique process of teachers evaluating other teachers, according to an article in the New York Times. Stronger teachers provide support to weaker ones, and teachers there also have the power to fire weaker teachers if they do not improve. The program, Peer Assistance and Review (PAR), allows more senior teachers to mentor new teachers and struggling veteran teachers. If the mentoring and assistance does not work, then the PAR panel of eight teachers and eight principals can vote to fire the struggling teacher(s). The PAR program also has the power to question tenured teachers. This program began 11 years ago, and it has voted to fire 200 teachers; 300 more have resigned after the comments in a PAR hearing, said Jerry D. Weast, superintendent of the Montgomery County Public School system. Weast also said that only five teachers were fired before the PAR program was implemented 11 years ago. The school system said that trust is pivotal when implementing the PAR program. All teachers must buy into the program, believing that they wont be fired to be made an example out of or because of their salary. Teachers must believe that the PAR panel will always act in the best interest of the school and its students for it to be successful. It took three to five years to build the trust to get PAR in place, Weast told the New York Times. Teachers had to see we werent playing gotcha. The Montgomery County Public School system is one of the growing number of schools to implement the PAR and other similar programs. Many other schools are beginning to extend teachers control and authority beyond the classroom to administrative decisions of hiring/firing and actually shaping course curriculum. Many believe that teachers know whats best for schools and students more so than anyone else involved in education because they are right there on the front lines of it. They believe veteran, proven teachers are better judges of good and bad teaching. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, told Weast that he supported his schools actions, saying, Youre going where the country needs to go, according to Weast and the New York Times. Unfortunately, for Weast and the Montgomery County Public School system, the PAR program will have to go. The Obama administrations Race to the Top program is trying to improve the quality of teachers just as the PAR program. Yet, the Montgomery County Public School system does not submit its students test scores to the federal government, thus making it ineligible for the $12 million Race to the Top funding.

You need to find an activity that’s suitable for their age, a teacher, a school, or an association offering the activity. Most dance schools will offer classes starting at a very young age. (Source: pgbsimon)So how can you do this when your child wants to learn how to dance?Dancing is quite a varied discipline.  With Zumba, salsa, hip hop, modern jazz, contemporary dance, etc. there are plenty of different styles. So which one should you choose? The golden rule is to let your child decide. No matter which activity they do, your child has to want to do it. Forcing a child to do something that they’re not interested in can make them frustrated and cause them to hate it. But there’s nothing to stop you from offering trial classes to help them to discover certain activities.  This is the best way to find out what kind of dancing they like.Choosing trial lessons is a great way to try out plenty of different dance styles. Spending a few months or even a whole year trying out different styles won’t be wasted time. These aren’t dance classes in the proper sense. Instead, children don’t learn dance routines off by heart. Dance introduction classes are more about discovery than actually learning a particular discipline. (Source: hdydi)The goal of these classes, as you may have guessed, is to introduce children to dancing by helping them understand how their body moves around a given space. They’ll do all sorts of dance exercises and learn how to move their body in time to music and express themselves. These young dancers will improve their rhythm and balance. At this age, they must learn how to use their body and channel their energy. Different exercises can help them burn off this exercise, calm down, and work on their concentration.  Children also need to learn to listen to their teacher and pay attention to their peers. It’s good for everything! An introduction dance doesn’t just cover moving around. Children can learn about music in general. They’ll discover different musical instruments and listen to different styles of music. These foundations will help them develop their creativity and ar tistic senses.Introductory classes will also teach them about performance. Similarly, they’ll learn how to express themselves through dance. They’ll build the foundations for becoming a professional dancer in the future.the classes to follow if you want to dance like your pop idols. Students learn how to do dynamic routines to popular music, which is why many teenagers are fans of this style. If your kids want to dance like their idols, you probably won't want ballet classes for them. (Source: Pexels)Of course, there are classes for those between 7 and 18 who want to learn more about rhythm and dance along to popular music.  A lot of dancers choose this style to imitate their idols as it’s a great opportunity to learn new and creative routines.Modern jazz classes are very open to improvisation and creativity. In small groups, dancers will choose songs to create routines to and show off their finished routines to the rest of the class. Beginners and intermediates will also learn steps that they can reuse in their routines.Children taking these types of classes often move onto urban or hip hop dance classes, which are even more popular than modern jazz was in the 2000s. After all, the popularity of certain styles tends to follow the popular genres of music. To see if your child would be interested in modern jazz or hip hop dance classes, you might want to try out free tria l classes. It would be a shame not to make the most of these free classes.Discover the benefits of children's dance classes.Ballet TutorialsWhen we think of kids dancing, we tend to think of them in a ballet class. After all, ballet classes are amongst the old dance classes around. Plenty of young boys and girls dream of becoming ballet dancers and performing on stage. Dance tutorials are tailored to the student so it won't be anything they can't handle. (Source: pgbsimon)Ballet classes are available from the time they go to primary school. It can be difficult starting ballet by the time you reach 15 or 16 but some schools will offer classes for late starters. However, it’s far more common for students to learn ballet from a young age since it’s much easier for them to learn a lot of the moves when they’re young. The earlier they start their ballet classes, the easier they’ll find it when they get older.Ballet is a demanding discipline that requires a lot of practice so don’t sign your child up to a ballet school unless they’re interested. Of course, you can always try out a free trial class or give ballet a go for a year. That said, if your child doesn’t feel comfortable with ballet, consider finding them a different discipline.Discover where you can find children's dance lessons.Choosing Original Dance StylesWho said that there were only ballet or hip hop classes? There are plenty of dance schools and dance associations offering far less common styles that you wouldn’t immediately think of. Your child may be interested in a number of these styles.African DanceThere are plenty of dynamic dance styles that are great for energetic children. African dance involves big movements with your whole body. From your head to your toes, every part of you moves to the rhythm with African dance. It’s a chance for your child to enjoy percussion.CapoeiraMuch like African dance, a lot of children are interested in Capoeira, too. Straight from Brazil, Capoeira is both dancing and martial arts, which is great for developing balance and flexibility. Young dancers “face-off” against one another in percussive rhythmic combat in which they never actually strike each other. It’s really impressive!Irish DancingYou can probably guess where this type of dancing comes from. What you mightn’t guess, is that you need to be in rea lly good shape to do the moves. Concentration is essential.TapTap dancing is still very popular. Tap’s popularity seems quite stable. It’s great for children because the dances are fun and catchy. Let them discover what they like.Discover what children's dance lessons are like.If you're looking for kids dance classes, look to your local dance company, dance school, or the tutors on Superprof for private dance lessons. There are many talented and experienced dance tutors on Superprof offering face-to-face tutorials, online tutorials, or group tutorials. Each type of tutorials comes with its pros and cons so it's up to you to choose the one that's best for you, your preferred learning style, and your budget.Face-to-face tutorials are the most cost-effective because you're the only student but they also tend to be the most costly per hour.Online tutorials tend to be cheaper per hour than face-to-face tutorials as the tutor doesn't have to pay travel costs and can schedule more tutor ials each week. This increased earning potential and fewer outgoings allow them to charge more competitive rates.Group tutorials are usually the cheapest per person per hour as the cost of the tutor's time is shared amongst each of the students in attendance. Of course, this also means that tutors time has to be shared between each student so they won't be able to offer as much one-on-one time as in private tutorials. Most of the tutors on Superprof offer free tutoring for the first hour so use this time to try out a few different tutors and see who's right for you.

How Personal Brand and Your Career Goals Connect in Order to be Successful - Introvert Whisperer

Introvert Whisperer / How Personal Brand and Your Career Goals Connect in Order to be Successful - Introvert Whisperer How Personal Brand and Your Career Goals Connect in Order to be Successful For the Twitter-minded, who like their quick hits, here’s the moral to this story: Your career is only going to go as far as your Personal Brand. That’s right. Your career goals and whether or not you achieve them and when you achieve them are completely driven by your Personal Brand. I don’t think many people really think of their Personal Brand as being such an impactful thing. Let me explain a few things about Personal Brand: Your Personal Brand is how you are perceived. It’s not about how you THINK you are, it’s about how others experience you. If those around you (especially decision-makers and management) don’t “see” you as X, then guess what? You aren’t going to be X. You create your Personal Brand by what you do. Simple concept. You might be a marketing who that just happens to geek out on making Excel spreadsheets for everyone. You’ve created a Personal Brand with both things: A Marketing-Excel God. Not bad unless you want to be a Corporate Lawyer. You can shape and re-shape your Personal Brand throughout your career. Rarely does anyone stay in 1 profession anymore. As we zig-zag our way through our career, we have to redefine what we focus on, talk about and do (our behavior) to go with each change. If we didn’t, there would be no zag to the zig. We’d be going nowhere. Your Personal Brand isn’t just one thing. You are one full recipe of a number of characteristics and attributes. It’s that combination of things that makes you completely unique. The question is: does that recipe reflect the career of your choice? If not, you’ve got changes to be making. You may not be that perceptive. Not only can be our own worst critics, we are often not very objective when figuring out how we come across to others. I’ve known of people who thought they were a darling but most people think of them as a jerk or wonky. If you’re out of sync between your perception and reality, that’s the reason you aren’t getting traction in your career. You need feedback on how you’re perceived and then you need to really listen to it. You have to perform. With all of this discussion about Personal Branding, at the heart of your Personal Brand is whether or not you are barely scraping by in your job or the resident rock star. You want to think of your job performance as the foundation of your Personal Brand. If you aren’t performing well, that is your Personal Brand. You can try to behave as a resident rock star, but you aren’t one if you can’t perform. Consider that your first step in Personal Branding if you’re sputtering. Think one step ahead. You always need to be thinking about what your next career step or progression is. You then need to be branding to that next step before you get there or you won’t get there. The President of the US doesn’t start acting like a President after the election. They begin branding as a President long before campaigning starts and if they don’t, poof goes that job potential. Is your Personal Brand adequately reflecting your career goal? If it’s not, the good news is you can reshape it to help you pave the way to success. The Benefits of Being Mindful in the Workplace - Introvert Whisperer

Introvert Whisperer / The Benefits of Being Mindful in the Workplace - Introvert Whisperer The Benefits of Being Mindful in the Workplace   Demands of the modern workplace are making our jobs more dynamic and unpredictable. That means we need to be more present, focused and on point in order to perform well on our day-to-day tasks. However, we are also fighting off distractions, monotony, fatigue, and similar foes that make us feel disconnected from our work. This usually results in productivity drops and cloudy judgment, which make us all the more likely to make mistakes. Feeling distracted from the present moment by past disappointments and future concerns can be quite frustrating. The good news is that “living in the now” is a skill you can work on and improve over time. This practice is more popularly known as being mindful. What Is Mindfulness?   The concept of mindfulness has its roots in Bhudistic practices. It is a psychological process that describes the sensation of being able to focus on the present moment. The idea entered the field of clinical psychology and psychiatry in the 70s and since then studies have shown that mindfulness can be useful for achieving and maintaining mental health. Mindfulness affects our cognition and behavior in a way that makes its benefits quite transferable and applicable to different areas of our lives including our career and work life. It doesn’t matter what type of job you’re doing, everyone can benefit from practicing mindfulness with a goal of improving their performance and taking their career to the next level. How Does Mindfulness Help Your Career and Work Life   Improves Focus and Productivity Being presents increases our focus and sparks our productivity. It’s a tool we use to deal with distractions and provides us with greater stability, control and efficiency.   Reduces Stress   Mindfulness is a great way of relieving excessive workplace stress. So much so that renowned corporations such as Google and Goldman Sachs are creating formal mindfulness programs to reduce the stress of their employees and to fight stress-caused absenteeism and disengagement. Facilitates Divergent Thinking Being more mindful means we’re also more creative. Living in the moment means we’re not relying on or limited by established patterns of thinking and it allows us to explore fresh approaches and ideas.   How To Practice Mindfulness Being mindful is a skill and it can be practiced and mastered. The essence of the practice is focusing on a particular sensation or action, recognizing when your mind inevitably wonders and simply guiding yourself back to the subject of your meditation. Experienced mindfulness practitioners describe the benefits as “strengthening a muscle” which will allow you to gain more control over your attention. There are several techniques that have proven to be very efficient for beginners: Deep Breathing Exercises Focusing on your breathing is probably the easiest exercise you can start with when practicing mindfulness. It’s recommended that you get to a relatively quiet space with little distraction. Close your eyes, breathe in deeply, hold your breath for a moment and then breathe out. While you’re doing this focus exclusively on your breathing and whenever you catch yourself thinking about anything else, simply restart the process again. You will notice over time that it’s easier to remain focus and you will suffer from fewer distractions. Raisin Meditation Meditating while eating raisins is an example of mindful eating. The idea behind the practice is that focusing on the different sensations caused by eating can improve our mindfulness over time. Raisin is a perfect candidate for this exercise because of its texture, shape, feel and strong flavor. The exercise should be around 5 minutes long and each raising should be consumed slowly, following a particular set of actions. The steps included are: observing the raisin, feeling it with your fingers, smelling it, exploring the texture before consuming it and finally, focusing on the taste, sensations of chewing and swallowing the raisin. Body Scan Meditation This technique is an extension of breathing exercises. Once you’ve gotten into position and you’ve done a couple of breathing-focused cycles, you can now choose a body part like your foot or your head and move your attention towards it. Notice the sensations you feel when focusing on that particular body part. There might be some tingling sensations, tightness or you might notice the difference in temperature from the rest of your body. After a certain amount of time, shift your focus back to your breathing and then proceed to explore another body part. Repeat the cycle until you’ve scanned your entire body.     Conclusion   The best thing about mindfulness is that you can have great results with minimal investments. Ten to twenty minutes of mindful meditation should definitely be added to your list of personal habits for a productive tomorrow. In the era of constant informational flow and sensory overload in the modern workplace, mindfulness will both protect our mental health while helping us become more productive and efficient.   … Author Bio: Mark is a biz-dev hero at  Invoicebus   a simple invoicing service that gets your invoices paid faster. He passionately blogs on topics that help small biz owners succeed in their business. He is also a lifelong learner who practices mindfulness and enjoys  long walks in nature more than anything else. What is it Like to Attend Brandeis University

What is it Like to Attend Brandeis University The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teach theyre sharing their college experiences as well. Steve is a 2012 graduate of Brandeis University. He studied French and Healthcare and is currently tutoring in New York City. He specializes in many subjects including Anatomy tutoring, Physiology tutoring, and ISEE prep tutoring. See what Steve had to say about his experience at Brandeis: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or safe is the campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Steve: Brandeis University is located in Waltham, Massachusetts. Its about 12 miles away from Boston proper and about 8 or 9 miles away from Cambridge. The campus itself is beautiful campus with many woods nearby and plenty of nature but its biggest complaint is that its a bit more hilly than other schools. There are two transportation options, the Bran-van and the Crystal Shuttle. The Bran-van shuttles students between Waltham and Brandeis, it runs every 15 minutes and it has a dedicated number to call for information. The Crystal Shuttle mainly runs during the weekend and it goes into Cambridge and picks up and drops students at Harvard Yard. The Shuttle runs until 2am during weekends. A car is helpful but only upperclassmen are allowed parking passes; for most people the Bran-van suffices for errands. A bike is a great investment but prior to getting one, one should investigate the bike-lending program that Brandeis offers. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Steve: The beauty about Brandeis is that because its such a small school and campus, there are only about 4000 students, both undergraduate and graduate on campus. Professors will always try their best to include and aid students outside of class. Academic advisors and teaching assistants are just as available. Thankfully with how integrated email is nowadays, if someones office hours dont sync up with your schedule, most people are more than happy to have email reservations for times that are convenient for both parties. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Steve: The dorm life at Brandeis is simple, at best. The rooms are what you make of them, it all boils down to how willing you are to decorate and revamp the room. Dining options are pretty set in stone. There are two main locations for dining, upper and lower campus. Lower campus is buffet style and is a great place to study and spend the day away in. Upper campus has specific hours when its open. There is also something called the C-store which is the campus convenience store which stays open until 2 A.M. most days. There are many socialization opportunities at Brandeis but again that depends on the disposition and personality of the person. There are parties and campus events, hundreds of clubs, dozens of sports teams. Any niche you can think of, chances are its being catered to. It goes without saying that Brandeis is a Jewish University but this should never pose a problem for anyone. As a student who isnt Jewish, I never felt ostracized or alienated; the environment and the stu dents themselves were gracious and understood that people come from all walks of life. I made friends for life and dont regret my decision at all. If you want to learn more about Judaism, there are many opportunities to do so but its neither overwhelming nor all-encompassing. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Steve: Brandeis supports and represents dozens of majors. In regards to the hard sciences, Brandeis is a research school and this is evident in how classes are structured and how curricula are developed. My major was French and Francophone Studies and American Healthcare. Brandeis excels at placing students in top-notch study abroad programs. Most students chose to do study abroad during their junior year for a semester, either fall or spring, or the entire year. Its not uncommon to see your class during junior year shrink a little. The professors for both my majors were excellent and truly gave me a solid foundation for what Id ultimately like to do, being a doctor for Doctors Without Borders. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Steve: As a freshman, the beauty about having to dorm and being away from home is that its a very conducive environment for making friends. Most students are unsure of or even scared of the decision they made to dorm away from home but because of this it also helps students expand their horizons and make new friends much quicker. After all, wouldnt you rather be unsure of something with other people? This isnt to scare or worry anyone; this is normal. Its a part of the transition from high school to college. All students are different so they may react to it or get used to it in different ways and in different amounts of time, but before you know it, itll be routine and youll laugh at how scared and nervous you were during the first couple of weeks. Greek life plays a barely significant role at Brandeis; you will always find pledging events, tabling events, or something sponsored by Greek life. It gets a little more complicated because Brandeis doesnt officially endorse any fraternit ies or sororities. For this reason, all Greek houses are actually off campus. The Greek life at Brandeis doesnt reign supreme like it does at other state schools. At Brandeis, the Greek life is more of a personal choice. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Steve: The Career Center and other Student Services are top-notch. Hiatt, the Career Center, excels at giving students the tools to get the right job or get into the right graduate school. During campus recruitment events, its not uncommon to have companies like Dell, Yahoo, Google, Goldman Sachs and various other excellent companies in attendance. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Steve: The study areas are spacious and easily available. They usually only get crowded during finals which may be a common trend for all schools. In addition, there has been some construction going on for expanding and improving locations for students to convene, study, and socialize. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Steve: Waltham is your run of the mill town; its small and family friendly. If youre used to suburbia, you probably have a good idea already. If youre from New York or another big city, it may be a slight adjustment. The best establishments are the many restaurants and bars that are on Moody Street, the main street in Waltham. Most students choose to go during the week to Moody Street for a nice diner or a quick drink. During the weekend, most students go sightseeing, or out on the town in Boston and Cambridge for those who miss the city life, which is easily accessible thanks to the Crystal Shuttle service that runs during the weekend. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Steve: The student body is around 4,000 students, making Brandeis a small, tight-knit school. Depending on the subject matter, classes may range from 7 students to 300 students. Lecture courses, like Biology or Psychology usually have around 200 to 300 students. Upper level classes are more likely to have fewer students, sometimes between 15-25 students. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Steve: The one class I loved the most was during my senior year, fall semester. It was called American Healthcare: Law and Policy; it was a healthcare class that touched upon the legal aspects of healthcare and the legal implications. I loved this class because of how much I ended up learning and how relevant everything I learned was to me and the nation in general. We spoke about Obamacare and how it would impact our nation. We learned about its many facets and how they would be put into place throughout the years. The class was very interesting because it was actually taught by a lawyer who made it seem all the more real and engaging. This is just one class I loved and I probably mention it because I took it not so long ago. My other favorite class was The Films of Disney. This class needs no explanation, we learned about the societal and cultural impact of Disney films on America and the world. We watched classic films during our free time and wrote papers that truly analyzed the films. Check out Steves tutoring profile. I’m currently 27 years old and when I am not working I enjoy watching some TV or just hanging out with friends. As for what I am currently up to, I spend all of my time focusing on KISSmetrics, which is a customer analytics platform. We show companies what people are doing on their website and what causes them to make a purchase or even ask for a refund. 2. Thinking back to your time in High School and College, what classes or training do you suggest for students aspiring to become entrepreneurs one day? I don’t think there are any classes that can help. Or at least there  werent  any that helped me. The best way to learn is by doing. I recommend you just go out there and participate in things like Startup Weekend. And if you like what you see there, you can always jump right in and start a company. 3. So, a tutor is kind of like a mentor. What mentors did you have and what affect did they have on your career or life decisions? My main mentor is a guy by the name of Andy Liu. He taught me a lot about business, how to find good deals, negotiation tactics, how to raise money, and countless number of other things. He had a huge impact on my life, I actually even moved to Seattle because of him. Over the last 7 years he has made me millions of dollars. 4. Did you ever need help from a tutor? Can you share your experience? I have. My mentor (tutor) guided me through tough parts in my entrepreneurial career such as lawsuits or how to get things done when you are strapped for cash. 5. Any final career advice for the budding entrepreneur in High School or College? You just need to go out there and do it. Stop spending you time in the classroom trying to learn about entrepreneurship as that’s the wrong place to do so. You’ll learn a lot more by doing.

Tips for Finding an Evidence Based Treatment Therapist

Tips for Finding an Evidence Based Treatment Therapist Learning that your child or teen has ADHD or is struggling with symptoms of anxiety or depression can be overwhelming, and its hard for parents to know what to look for when they are searching for a therapist who can help. For your child to have the best chance of success with treatment, it is essential that parents look for a therapist who provides evidence-based treatments. Evidence-based treatments have undergone rigorous testing through scientific studies and clinical trials and have been proven to be effective for many kids with ADHD and other mental health problems (for a description of evidence-based treatments see my previous post on this topic. Unfortunately, there is no simple way for parents and other consumers to know in advance whether a therapist provides evidence-based treatments. Occasionally, a therapist will have participated in a specific evidence-based treatment certification program and this certification will be listed on their website. While this makes it much easier for parents to have confidence in the therapists use of evidence-based treatments, many highly qualified, highly trained therapists who provide evidence-based treatments have not received these certifications. So, relying on a certification alone isnt a great option. Overall, finding a good evidence-based therapist requires interviewing the therapist and asking key questions to determine whether evidence-based approaches will be incorporated into your childs treatment. Questions to Ask Prospective Therapists When interviewing potential therapists for your child, ask the following questions. You should expect to hear answers that are consistent with the description of evidence-based treatments that I provided in my previous post. Training and Credentials Have you received training in any evidence-based treatments? Which treatments or approaches have you been trained in specifically? Where did you receive this training? Do you have any certifications? How much experience do you have treating children or teens with ADHD (and/or other conditions or challenges that may apply to your child)? Measuring symptoms and treatment progress What type of assessments do you conduct at the start of treatment? Do you use rating scales or measures and clinical interviews? Will I be expected to complete measures about my childs symptoms and behavior? Will you collect measures from my childs teacher as well? How do you measure treatment progress (i.e., how will you know if my child is improving)? What will you do if my childs symptoms arent improving? Treatment and Treatment plan Do you create a treatment plan after you complete the initial assessment? Do you consult with parents when creating the treatment plan?Which treatments or treatment approaches do you use for ADHD (and/or other conditions or challenges that may apply to your child)?Do you recommend any websites or have any materials to share that will help me learn more about these treatments and approaches? Session content Do your sessions typically involve working on new skills or strategies?Do you expect your clients to practice new skills and strategies at home in between therapy sessions? Parent involvementWhat is the role of parents in the childs treatment? How often will I (and my co-parent) be expected to attend treatment sessions? Will I be expected to help my child practice new skills and strategies at home? Treatment length After you complete the initial assessment, will you provide an estimate of how many therapy sessions you think my child will need?Do your clients usually remain in treatment for a few months or a few years?Do you encourage booster or maintenance sessions after treatment ends? As a parent it is ultimately up to you to decide which therapist and treatment approach is the best fit for your child. Choosing a therapist is like choosing any other professional who delivers a service, and finding the right fit requires some research and legwork upfront. Fortunately, this effort will pay off when your child is able to work with a therapist who is trained in evidence-based treatments that can be tailored to meet your childs individual needs. ___________________________________ *Note that before meeting with any therapist, you should always confirm that they are licensed in your state.
